Travel Plan
Carla:
“Shae, wake up, we’re getting food.”
I turn around in my seat and shake her by the leg, she’s startled awake. That makes us one for one on getting spooked.
Carla:
“Can you go inside and order something for us? I want a coffee and whatever you’re having.”
I say as I reach into my wallet and pull out my card to hand it to her. It will leave a trail, but I’ve run out of cash, no other option and I don’t intend on starving. She’s looking at me like a beaten up puppy.
Carla:
“I need to make a call, I will join you in a minute. Can you do this for me, please?”
I grab my phone and dial Kingsley, currently saved as a contact under a mysterious alias “Bitch (literal).” Shae leaves the car and heads towards the roadside diner.
Kingsley:
“Damn, still alive?”
Carla:
“Better luck next time. Any updates?”
Kingsley:
“Still looking.”
Carla:
“It’s been a couple of hours, there’s nothing at all?”
Kingsley:
“Well, there are two options but I think you won’t like them.”
Carla:
“Lay it on me.”
Kingsley:
“There’s this good old friend of mine near your old place, who--”
Carla:
“Pass. Too dangerous.”
Kingsley:
“Yep. And there’s that haven I told you about some time ago.”
I nod my head, not that Kingsley can see it. It’s in Paris. Full day of driving away, including stops.
Carla:
“I was thinking about it. It’s a long fucking drive, but came to me as safest option right now. We will have to sleep at some point and I don’t know if we’re being pursued. I’ve run out of cash too, hope Haji can mask a card payment.”
I feel the phone vibrate in response. Quick glance tells me it’s a notification from Haji. Our little hacker is already rudely listening in.
Carla:
“Speak of the devil. Anyway, I will start heading there; let me know if you’ve got anything better for us, alright sweetie?”
Kingsley:
“Sure, fucko, sounds like a plan. One more thing.”
Carla:
“Yeah?”
Kingsley:
“I miss you Carla.”
I sigh.
Carla:
“I love you Kinglsey, miss you too.”
I hang up and look at the notification.
Haji:
// untraceable car parked at diner // black sedan // do not go in //
A cold shiver runs down my spine.
